Visual Communication for Non-Designers

About this Certificate Program: Published content is increasingly dominated by visual images and this course is intended to help text-oriented incorporate visual images more extensively in their work. Specifically, this certificate program builds skills in visual literacy. Part of the course takes a critical approach to developing visual literacy and, in it, you evaluate the effectiveness of visual communication in examples of practical communication. The other part of this course takes a hands-on approach to visual communication, explaining how to use the elements of design, such as typography, color, layout, pictures, and symbols, and apply the principles learned to the design of screens, pages and an all-visual job aid (a quick guide to performing a task).

At the end of this program, students are eligible for a certificate of completion.

Who Should Attend: Technical communicators, instructional designers, professional communicators, web developers, and others who develop content and want to design materials with stronger visual impact.

Main Objective: Apply the principles of visual communication when designing and developing practical communication products.

• Given a communication problem, choose appropriate typography.
• Design a printed or online display.
• Given quantitative information, choose an appropriate form of display.
• Using visuals as the primary means of communication, present technical information visually.
• Appropriately apply color to a page or screen design.
• Develop designs that are visually consistent with corporate identity.
• Critically consider the visual elements of professional communication products.
• Describe the impact that the design process has on the finished product.
• Identify issues that may arise in communicating visually and using page and screen designs across cultures.
• Identify ethical issues that arise when using visuals, and page and screen designs, across cultures.
