Chapter 12 --> E-Learning in Action
For the past seven months, Bill has designed and developed an online course and related resources for workplace safety. His e-learning site includes:
- An online assessment that learners can use to determine how much they already know about safety and an action plan
to build their knowledge to the level that the company prescribes
- Three 30-minute safety modules
- An online assessment of the safety of various work environments and, depending on the score, suggestions for correcting safety violations
- Archives of a new monthly newsletter on safety
- Links to various online resources on workplace safety, such as the National Safety Council
The Director of Safety complimented Bill on the safety program, then asked Bill how he plans to promote and support it.
"Good question," Bill responded.

About a week after their first conversation, Bill reports back to the Director of Safety with a plan for
launching and maintaining the new series of learning programs, which he plans to publish within 4 weeks. Specifically, Bill plans to do the following:
- Within the next week, Bill plans to prepare the collateral material for the course. He is revising the course description and
plans to submit it to the course catalog, along with an inviting description of online learning. (In his company, the catalog is
printed once a quarter, and is available online.)
- Bill has also set up a promotional plan. He’ll issue a press release, of sorts, the day of publication,
and host a demonstration of the course in the employee cafeteria the following 5 days. Bill plans to serve fortune
cookies at the demo; each fortune leads learners to the web address for the online learning program. About a month
after the initial launch of the course, Bill plans to send a flyer both in print and online. He will include comments from satisfied students.
- Bill has left 5 hours a week in the first 4 weeks for fixing possible programming bugs, and has
asked the course developer to set aside 3 hours a week for the 2 months after the launch of the course for e-coaching.
Monitoring use during those two months, Bill and the course developer will determine how much time to
leave for e-coaching after the 2-month period. Bill also plans to update the course content once a month. He is
most concerned about the accuracy of links and plans to check those monthly.
- Bill also plans to ask every student for a course evaluation, and will publish results to the management in the learning
organization and to the Director of Safety.
- Finally, Bill has scheduled a post-mortem for 1 week after the review.
