Following are links to information that I have found helpful in working as a volunteer
leader with nonprofits.
Most of the links are to U.S.-wide resources. Some are for local resources in
communities where I have lived: Boston, Atlanta, and Minneapolis. All three are known for
exceptional support of the nonprofit sector.
- Helping.org, a site
for volunteers, with an extensive set of links
- Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management's Nonprofit
Links, which lists nonprofit resources, periodicals, funding resources, support
organizations with helpful sites, and colleges and universities that have programs in
nonprofit management
- Nonprofit Nuts and Bolts, a how-to guide for
executive directors and other leaders (primarily for organizations with a staff, but many
of the suggestions transfer to volunteer-run organizations)
- Nonprofit Times online
- P. Drucker Foundation for
NonProfit Management
- Third Sector New England, which
publishes a quarterly journal on nonprofits, sponsors conferences, and produces policy
papers on the nonprofit world
- Tieline, the Society for Technical
Communication's newsletter for chapter and society leaders, which offers tips and
techniques for publicity, newsletters, programming, meetings, and communication

- Allocations Challenge, an interactive
exercise in the complexities of budgeting and funding nonprofit groups
- about.com's portal on
nonprofit management, which provides information on nonprofit management, grant
writing, fund raising, technology for nonprofits, and special types of nonprofits
- Society for Nonprofit Organization's reading list, which includes books
on fundraising, marketing, volunteer management, and board management

- Chapter Leader's Handbook, a
veritable how-to guide for almost every ongoing job in an organization. Although the book
is specifically geared towards members of the Society for Technical Communication (STC),
its lessons apply to nearly every type of organization in which volunteers have primary
responsibility for performing the work
Alliance Online (formerly the Support
Centers of America), which links you to consulting, training, and other support services
for nonprofit organizations in your community
Management Consulting Services, a Boston-based
group providing consulting services and training to nonprofit organizations
- Minnesota'sManagement Assistant Program for Nonprofits,
which provides confidential consulting services to nonprofits as well as training courses
(especially on computer and board skills
- Atlanta's Nonprofit Resource Center, which is a one-stop shop for training and
consultation on nonprofits, as well as career oppportunities in the nonprofit world
