In-depth Workshops

Title Description Audience, Format, and Length
A Crash Course in Volunteer Leadership Leadership is a combination of many characteristics: practical interpersonal skills, management skills, personal commitment and values, and self-esteem. This day-long workshop explores each. By asking how you might respond to a variety of leadership dilemmas, you’ll explore:
  • The practical skills needed of a good leader, such as meeting, priority and time management, communication follow-through, and budgeting
  • Management responsibilities of volunteer leaders, including legal and financial obligations to the community and to the state
  • The role of values in leadership, including the challenge of clashing values and the effect of the personal values you bring to your volunteer work

As you explore these issues, you’ll learn practical techniques and helpful insights to guide you in future endeavors as a community leader.

Audience: Officers, board members, committee managers, staff and senior volunteers of nonprofits.

Format: Seminar.

Length: Full-day , ideally taken at the beginning of a term of office.

Where You've Been and Where You're Going--Evaluation for the Smaller Nonprofit (workshop length) How well are you meeting clients' needs and your board's vision? If you decide to add new services, which ones should you consider and how might they be received? This workshop shows you how to unearth the answers to these questions. It presents a framework for analyzing and evaluating your organization and its programming as well as practical analysis and evaluation techniques you can use. Course material is reinforced through exercises and demonstrations. Audience: Board members, committee managers, staff, and senior volunteers of nonprofits.

Format: Seminar.

Mini-Workshops

Title Description Audience, Format, and Length
How to Avoid Volunteer Burnout Learn to recognize the signs of burnout before they occur, and identify strategies for avoiding the burnout of volunteers, including hiring staff to handle administrative and ritual duties. Audience: Lay leadership of nonprofits.

Format: Conference presentation, or in-house technical vitality seminar.

Length: 60-90 minutes.

Ideas for Efficient, Effective Board Interactions Identify techniques for effectively starting the Board year, efficiently managing Board meetings, effectively handling personnel challenges that might arise, and effectively planning the transition to the next Board. Audience: Board members of nonprofits.

Format: Conference presentation, or in-house technical vitality seminar.

Length: 60-90 minutes.

The Volunteer Connection--Recruiting and Retaining Volunteers: Learn techniques for recruiting volunteers, "setting them up for success" in their positions, and showing appropriate appreciation for their contributions. Also learn how to handle those situations in which you cannot recruit a volunteer to handle a task. Audience: Volunteer leaders and managers of nonprofits.

Format: Conference presentation, or in-house technical vitality seminar.

Length: 60-90 minutes.

Newsletters 101 Explains how to plan and publish newsletters that increase members' commitment to the organization as well as techniques that make the workload manageable. Audience: Volunteer staff of newsletters for nonprofit organizations.

Length: 60-90 minutes.

Educational Programs 101 Explains how to plan and produce programs that appeal to members' intellectual and emotional needs, as well as create a sense of community among members. Also explains how to plan programs within budgets, and how to establish priorities. Audience: Members of program committees for nonprofit organizations.

Format: Conference presentation, or in-house technical vitality seminar.

Length: 60-90 minutes.
