There are two primary users of this document: families who need to place a loved one in
a long-term care setting and senior citizens who are deciding on an appropriate long-term
care setting for themselves.
Family Members
This user could be an adult looking to place a parent in long-term care or it may be
the spouse or significant other of a medically compromised patient. Both of these users
could be in an emotional state of mind. Placing a loved one into long-term care is a
difficult decision, especially if the decision has to be made immediately.
The adult looking to place a parent in long-term care varies in age from their late 20s
to early 60s. Their educational and professional backgrounds also vary. This users first
concern in placing their parent in long-term care is safety and appropriate nursing care.
Proximity to home (their own or their parents) is also important. Cost, availability of
rooms and activities will also be considered. This user may be male or female.
The spouse or significant other looking at long-term care options will be concerned
with appropriate nursing care, proximity to home, cost and activities. These users range
in age from their early 40s to their 80s. Educational and professional backgrounds will
vary.
Senior Citizens
For senior citizens considering long-term care, they are concerned with cost, location,
social activities and appropriate nursing care. These users are in their late 60s to late
70s and may be independent or require minimal assistance with daily care. They may have
some minor health concerns, though some may have medical issues such as diabetes, high
blood pressure, cardiac or respiratory disease.
All of these users will expect a brochure to provide information on cost or payment
options, location(s), appropriate skilled nursing services and how to contact the facility
or receive more information. The brochure will educate the user on the options available
and assist in a decision making process.
