Crash Course in Community Leadership

Length: 1 day, ideally taken at the beginning of a term of office.

About this Certificate Program: Leadership is a combination of many characteristics: practical interpersonal skills, management skills, personal commitment and values, and self-esteem. This day-long workshop explores each. By asking how you might respond to a variety of leadership dilemmas, you’ll explore:

• The practical skills needed of a good leader, such as meeting, priority and time management, communication follow-through, and budgeting
• Management responsibilities of volunteer leaders, including legal and financial obligations to the community and to the state
• The role of values in leadership, including the challenge of clashing values and the effect of the personal values you bring to your volunteer work

As you explore these issues, you’ll learn practical techniques and helpful insights to guide you in future endeavors as a community leader.

Who Should Attend: Officers, board members, committee managers, staff and senior volunteers of nonprofits.
